My First time playing in the New York City subway
The First time playing in the New York City subway In February 2023, I arrived in the United States. Music, along with the opportunities God placed in my path, brought me to New York City.
During my first few months, I worked at a burger restaurant called The Counter. Although it was a completely different experience from what I was used to — since I had never worked in anything other than music — it became a meaningful stage in my personal and professional growth. It’s an experience I would definitely repeat.
It wasn’t until October of that same year that I decided to dedicate myself fully to playing the violin. That moment marked a turning point in my life.
This first vlog marks the beginning of a very special journey: a first season of 20 episodes that I will be sharing on YouTube. In each episode, I show part of my process, my experiences, and my growth as a musician in a city as demanding as New York.
The video begins as I leave my residence in Elmhurst, on my way to perform with my Dominican-Chinese friend Dioyi-Xi at the central platform of the 1, 2, 3, and 4 subway lines (the red line). That moment was very special for me — it was the first time I played alongside another musician in the Big Apple.
It was a very cold October, but I was full of energy and hungry to take on the world, sharing my first melodies inside the MTA.
After that experience, I felt something unusual… like Peter Parker. Because I realized that if I have a talent — no matter how small — it comes with great responsibility.
Soon after, a new version of me was born: “Spider Lugo.” Yes, I even dressed up as Spiderman, bringing music and entertainment everywhere I went. This character became something much bigger than I ever imagined.
The energy was so powerful that it eventually took me to Denver, Colorado, where I had the opportunity to perform at an event with people who discovered me through my performances in the MTA.
I will soon begin a second season from the Dominican Republic, starting a new chapter. But before closing this cycle, I felt the need to write about each of these episodes.
That’s why in the upcoming posts, I will be sharing more details about some of the 20 vlogs, so that anyone interested can get to know more about my story, my music, and the path I continue to build.
