If You’re Not Making a Living from Music… You’re Not as Good at Selling as You Think
If you’re not making a living from music, you’re either not positioning yourself correctly or you don’t know how to sell your talent.
Throughout these past 8 years of living from music, I’ve realized something very interesting: it’s not always the most talented or the most skilled musician who earns the most. Let’s take an example. Who would have imagined that Bad Bunny would achieve everything he has? That he would perform at the Super Bowl? At least I didn’t.
Knowing how to sell yourself is also a skill—and it can be developed. To make a living from music, you need to sell, especially now that social media is accessible to everyone. So leave your ego aside. Don’t think people will see you as desperate. Instead, think in terms of value and pricing, just like any other service or product.
If you already know how to make music, then the next step is learning how to position yourself and find your place in the market. You don’t have to be the most virtuosic musician. Believe me, I know many incredibly talented players who still don’t make a living from music.
