Street Life Shapes the True Artist

The key to success is out on the streets. While other musicians were waiting for an audition or a call to perform, I was building my own audience right there. I had no stage, no fans, absolutely nothing—just people walking by without any intention of listening.

Busking taught me something that neither school nor the conservatory ever did: how to connect without a stage, how to make eye contact, how to play and fight to achieve your dreams. It also teaches you to deal with setbacks, like when a homeless person simply steals from you. That happened to me in New York several times, and I’m not the only one. Ed Sheeran started playing on the streets and now fills stadiums, and Justin Bieber was discovered busking as well.

Personally, I believe the street is where you learn everything you need to become great. What started at a simple train station took me to many states across the U.S. It’s an incredibly organic and effective form of exposure. Thanks to busking, opportunities came that I never imagined. I even managed to book weddings across hundreds of events. That’s why I owe everything to the streets, whether it’s the streets of Santo Domingo Dominican Republic or New York City.
